The Wyoming Speech and Debate Union is a co-curricular intercollegiate organization that is housed in the Department of Communication and Journalism at the University of Wyoming. We are also an Registered Student Organization (RSO). It is open to any undergraduate students currently enrolled at the University of Wyoming. The team participates in NDT/CEDA policy style debate as well as NPDA parliamentary debate. In addition to these competitive debate activities, the team also hosts on campus public debates several times a year and coordinates other service opportunities on campus and off. The policy team travels during both the fall and spring semesters and attends 4-5 tournaments each semester culminating in the national tournaments at the end of March each year. Parliamentary debate travel is newly returning to the program and anticipates travel to regional tournaments approximately once a month during the fall and spring semesters. Students who are not interested in competitive debate are able to participate in the on campus public debates hosted by the team. There is generally at least one public debate held each semester and previous topics have included the marijuana policy in Wyoming after legalization in Colorado and diversifying the Wyoming economy from energy dependence. The team has also participated in service events such as working on the non-discrimination ordinance for the city of Laramie. The Wyoming Speech and Debate Union seeks to provide a diverse set of opportunities for all students regardless of skill level, experience or available time commitment. Students should feel free to approach the director with inquiries about different debate formats and potential opportunities in which they are interested.
